The 1d red plates that "never were"....

The ever popular 1d red has a lot to offer both casual collectors and serious philatelists. Over the 38 years of its production from the earliest 1d red imperforates printed from the same plates as the Penny Black in 1841 through to the final issue of the 4 corner lettered plate 225 in 1879 there is a great range of stamps to be collected and studied.

Probably the most popular 1d red issue is the G1 1d red printed from the Die II plates listed by Stanley Gibbons under their catalogue number SG43/44 running from Plate 71 to Plate 225.

The last roller made to produce the plates for this series of stamps was roller number 25 on September 19th 1878.
